Walking the talk for prostate research

Prostate cancer survivor Linton Blackwell will walk the talk on September 13 covering 35 kilometres from Moe to Warragul as part of The Long Run to raise awareness of the disease and funds for research and support.
Mr Blackwell, who lives in Moe, plans to walk at least 400 kilometres during September, prostate cancer awareness month, well above the 72 kilometres the campaign calls on Australians to run, walk or ride.
Having taken part in The Long Run every year since 2020 he has clocked up a total of 1723 kilometres and raised $13,000.
Mr Blackwell and his wife Pam lead the Baw Baw Prostate Cancer Support Group and will attend its meeting in Warragul after completing his walk from Moe.
He said his aim was to get the message out about early detection and testing.
"For me, The Long Run is all about getting the message out there about early detection and PSA testing," he said.
"Many people think it's an old man's disease but those where there is a family history of prostate cancer need to be talking with a GP about testing options from aged 40 and others from aged 50".
Early detection saves lives and helps to ensure prostate cancer is detected early when it is easiest to treat, he said.
PCFA chief executive officer Anne Savage commended Mr Blackwell for making a difference once again.
"Community action is key to cancer control, helping us to raise awareness of Australia's most commonly diagnosed cancer and encourage early detection," Ms Savage said.
"Linton is an inspiration – demonstrating that together we can make a difference, helping love go the distance against prostate cancer."
The Long Run supports men and their families by providing vital funding for clinical trials and prostate cancer nurses.
This year's event is aiming to raise $1 million during September. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) campaign calls on Australians to run, walk or ride 72km throughout Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness and funds for research and support.
