An international advocate of female rights will address a luncheon of Gippsland businesswomen on Thursday.
Dr Emma Fulu, who has led some of the most impactful global studies and programs on ending violence against women and girls including for the United Nations, will be guest speaker at the luncheon organised by Gippsland Women in Business.
Dr Fulu founded The Equality Institute, a global feminist agency to advance all forms of equality and which now operates in more than 30 countries, has conducted in excess of 50 studies and trained thousands of people.
Her presentation on Thursday - Gender Equality Starts with You - will explain what workplaces need to do to create meaningful change and give a five-step framework for action. She has a unique ability to combine her personal story with the latest data and evidence, to bring complex ideas to life and touch hearts and minds.
GWIB president Kim Brew said achieving gender equality was not about erasing gender differences, but protecting and upholding people's rights, responsibilities, and opportunities, and ensuring access to these was not dependent on their gender or the sex they were assigned at birth.
"Gender equality provides the necessary conditions for addressing the underlying causes that drive or predict violence to help achieve long-term change."
"GWIB calls out to all sections of our business community to join the conversation and action women-specific initiatives as an equity measure. We want to recognise the specific barriers faced by women that do not exist for men.
"The intent of such initiatives is to be fair, so that equality can be achieved," she said.
The luncheon will be at De Grandis Winery at Traralgon from 11am to 2pm at a cost of $60. Further information is available at gippslandwomeninbusiness.com
