Attempts to dislodge a bogged vehicle allegedly caused a fire at Longwarry on Wednesday morning.
Police found a car engulfed in flames at the Longwarry truck stop on the Princes Fwy at 9am.
A man, a 21-year-old from Western Australia, was seen running away.
Once apprehended, the man told police his car had broken down in South Australia and had been loaned the vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Corolla.
He alleged the car had become bogged at the truck stop and he had put a baby seat and car mats under the wheels to provide traction. However, this created friction and started a fire.
Police said the Corolla had been reported stolen. The 21-year-old man was charged with theft of a car.
