An appeal for people to protest new biosecurity taxes that will push up prices of fresh food has been made by Member for Monash Russell Broadbent.
The federal government's 2023-2024 budget includes $845 million to be spent over the next four years on biosecurity with increases in fees and levies on taxpayers, importers, international travellers and producers.
Mr Broadbent said farmers - there are more than 3000 in the Monash electorate - would pay higher charges that inevitably would be passed on to consumers via higher grocery bills.
The new taxes are to be introduced from July next year.
Mr Broadbent said that a future coalition government would scrap the tax.
"Instead of taxing farmers, under the coalition plan importers of foreign products will pay for the biosecurity risk, not Australian farmers".
He said the tax was senseless and urged people to get more details and register their protest at www.haveyoursay.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-funding
