Garfield Bowling Club results were all positive this week.
Midweek
Garfield weren't very good hosts and took all the spoils against Traralgon on Tuesday.
Division three: Garfield defeated Traralgon (3) 72/48
Maureen Lamport's rink, consisting of Jan Johnson, Gerry Wakefield and Bob Lamport, bolted away at the beginning and were 15 shots to the good before their opponents even scored. Thereafter, the game was relatively equal, ending in a win by Garfield of 27/13.
Steve Hyam, Richard Ross, Lexi Taylor and skip Helene Newton also started well, leading 19/6 after 11 ends. Then, Traralgon made a comeback, being down by only two shots after 15 ends. But that was the end of the opposition, and the Garfielders stormed home to win 28/20.
The match on the rink of Margaret Hyam, Luke Monckton, Damian Brick and skip Gwen Fabris was a much closer affair all day. After two ends, Traralgon led by 2/1, but that was the only point at which they were in front. Garfield led by just three shots going into the last end. With only the skips left to play, Traralgon held three shots to potentially tie the score, but Gwen was having none of that. She came into the head and cut their holding to just one shot, which remained the final score for the end. This gave Garfield the win, 17/15.
This good win confirms the side's position in second place on the ladder.
Saturday
Garfield stayed home to play cellar-dwellers Warragul in what was expected to be an easy game. However, whilst Garfield won the match, it was only by eight shots.
Division three: Garfield defeated Warragul (2) 77/69
The team of Alan Wilson, Bob Lamport, Gary Helmore and skip Stephen Whyte were down 3/7 early, but got themselves into stride and came away winners 23/15.
Graeme Burton, Brian Fox, Alan White and skip Shane Oliver struggled all day to get any traction. They lost 10/25.
The team of Les Pumphrey, Gary Payne, Steve Bassed and skip Nick Henwood lost the first two ends, but caught up on the third. While they only won 11 of the 21 ends, they did so with good numbers while limiting their opposition to ones and twos. As a result, Garfield won 27/16.
Tom Cleary's team, consisting of Frank Prins, Len Preece and Joe Lenders played the closest of Garfield's winning games, steadily accumulating scores, to win 17/13.
The win has the side in top position on the ladder.
Division five: Garfield lost to Longwarry (2) 58/65
Garfield travelled just down the road to play against Longwarry. Two good wins were had but a lopsided loss turned the overall result in Longwarry's favour.
In the absence of regular skip Gwen Fabris, Gerry Wakefield stepped up to the plate for his first shot at skipping for Garfield. Coincidentally, it was against his old club.
With teammates Keith Cooke, Margaret Hyam and Lexi Taylor, they strode out and were never headed. After 13 ends, they were up 20/4. Even though no break was taken, it almost seemed that way. Their opponents made a second half comeback to reduce the deficit 24/13.
Wes Goodman, Steve Hyam, Luke Monckton and skip Damian Brick started slowly and were down by six shots before they got on the board. They got going and only trailed by four shots after 13 ends. After that, it was all Garfield, as they stormed home to win 24/16.
The team of Shirley Corcoran, Maureen Lamport, Barrie Smith and skip Helene Newton drew the short straw, copping the strongest of the Longwarry teams.
For the first half of the game, they kept their heads up and were 9-all after 11 ends. From then on, they only won one end and lost 10/36.
This loss has dropped the side to eighth place on the ladder, where they will languish for two weeks, as there is no Saturday pennant due to the Victorian Bowls Open Championships.
