Narracan Shire was proclaimed in 1878, with annexations and severances causing many changes to its boundaries over the years.
Moe was the administrative centre until the shire officers were transferred to Contingent St, Trafalgar in 1908.
In 1934, a fire destroyed the shire office and mechanics' institute. A new building - now the community centre - was built on the highway.
The present public hall replaced the shire offices on the Contingent St site in that year.
In 1994, most of Narracan Shire was amalgamated with Buln Buln and Warragul shires to form Baw Baw Shire.
