A pleasant stroll in Uralla Nature Reserve at Trafalgar in the cause of science and a barbecue lunch is on offer on Saturday, September 7.
It's all part of a global Biodiversity Blitz arranged by volunteer community group Friends of Uralla and Baw Baw Shire.
All people need to do to be a "citizen scientist" from 10.30am to noon, when the barbecue will be fired up, is to grab their walking shoes and a BYO water bottle, bring a telephone or camera, possibly some family and friends and even the pet dog provided it is on a lead.
Everybody is welcome on the day at the reserve at 155 Giles Rd, Trafalgar, Friends of Uralla volunteer Louise Kennedy Young said.
Those that take up the invitation will be asked to photograph as many species of plants, animals, fungi and weeds they see for inclusion on the iNaturalist app.
Ms Kennedy Young said strolling through the reserve's tracks people could come across the rare Trafalgar millipede among the leaf litter, an echidna, birds, koalas, rodents, insects and some colourful fungi or weed species.
The free barbecue being supplied by neighbouring Central Agri Group will be a great chance for people to have a chat and finish posting their photos to the app.
It will be a fun event, great for mental and physical wellbeing and an opportunity to understand the diverse species living in the local environment, Ms Kennedy Young said.
Numbers of participants are limited and people should register in advance by contacting Baw Baw Shire's environment team on 5624 2411.
Uralla Nature Reserve is owned by Trust for Nature and managed by Baw Baw Shire.
