Election fines incoming

Fines totalling more than one-quarter of a million dollars are on the way to enrolled Narracan electorate voters that did not cast ballots at the state election.
The Victorian Electoral Commission last week began mailing out 2480 infringement notices stipulating fines of $92 each to people in Narracan that have not given a valid explanation of why they didn't vote.
The number represents almost five per cent of the number of people on the Narracan roll at the time of the election.
All but 130 of the fines have been issued to people that did not respond to an earlier "apparent failure to vote" notice.
The VEC said more than 3300 apparent failure to vote notices were issued in the electorate with 833 people excused from penalties after providing valid reasons for not voting.
Those that receive infringement notices have 35 days to request an internal review, elect to progress the matter to court or pay the fines.
Across Victoria more than 220,000 people have been issued infringement notices for failing to vote and not being excused.
If they all pay the fines it will deliver almost $20 million to the state government.
