Driveway inspections

Inspections of driveways in residential areas of Baw Baw Shire will be undertaken this month to test compliance.
The inspections, initiated by the shire, are aimed at identifying non-compliant driveways and reduce the $120,000 council spends each year on safety works and avoidable damage repairs.
Under its Local Laws, it is mandatory for a suitable crossover - also known as driveway access point - to be installed wherever vehicles access private property from council assets, including roadways and nature strips.
The shire reported initial investigations had found numerous driveways failed to comply with regulations and were constructed using suitable materials.
The use of inadequate materials in crossovers compromises the ability to bear the weight of vehicles, leading to costly and hazardous damage to footpaths, nature strips, kerbing, and roadways, the shire said.
Baw Baw Shire mayor Annemarie McCabe said reducing the number of non-compliant crossovers would help prevent costly and avoidable damage to community assets, whilst improving safety for pedestrians and drivers.
"If you are a new property owner or builder, it is important to make sure that your driveway access points comply with regulations to avoid future expense," Cr McCabe said. "If you are unsure whether your crossovers follow the rules, please reach out to our helpful asset protection team. They are happy to answer any questions and ensure your crossover is up to standard."
Throughout July, council will undertake detailed inspections in residential areas. Following these investigations, owners of properties with non-compliant crossovers may receive notices requiring them to rectify their crossovers at their own expense.
