West Gippsland Hospital was forced to cancel elective surgeries scheduled for last Thursday and Friday because of the risk of compromised air quality in theatres.
West Gippsland Healthcare Group chief executive officer Dan Weeks said air testing revealed compromised air quality in the theatre complex following planned renovations in the Central Sterilising Department (CSD).
He explained disturbance of the ceiling space allowed contamination of a common type of fungus, Aspergillus, that was recorded within the CSD during post works monitoring.
Mr Weeks said the works had been completed and a deep clean of the affected area was underway.
"While there has been no confirmed Aspergillus contamination in the three operating theatres, given the close proximity of CSD, the operating theatres will be closed while they are tested, as a precautionary measure," he said.
Mr Weeks said results were expected to be available over the weekend.
He said 21 patients were impacted. All were advised and will have their surgeries rescheduled as soon as possible.
"Patient safety remains the top priority and we thank our patients, staff and medical consultants for their patience during this disruptive period," Mr Weeks said.
