Gippsland Flippers Masters Swimming Club recently had 11 of its 20 members compete in the Masters Swimming Victoria Short Course Championships.
Of the 11 members, six were competing in a masters swimming event for the first time. This included Maria Slot who is in her 70s.
Stand out swims were achieved by all. Every member medalled and, as five relay teams swam, competition was fierce in two age groupings, resulting in success for all of those teams.
Competition was keen with 250 swimmers at the first dual sanctioned event with Swimming Victoria and Masters Swimming Victoria at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, including numerous interstate and international competitors.
Swims ranged from 25m to 200m, including an amazing swim in the 200m butterfly by new member Andrew Crozier.
Andrew was also successful in many other events, breaking his own personal bests in a number of swims.
It was astounding to see new members step up to the challenge of not only competing, but being brave enough to go "off the blocks".
Gippsland Flippers encourages anyone who wants to get back into swimming to contact the club and have a swim or two prior to joining.
The club's motto is "fitness, fun and friendship" and the social side of the club is taken seriously.
Swimmers must be capable of swimming a lap competently. Competition is encouraged but not mandatory.
