Stars struggle as Dusties delight in West Gippsland footy
7 min read

The top teams flexed their muscles in round six of the West Gippsland Football Competition, as the Warragul Industrials broke into the top five with a massive win.
Warragul Industrials vs Kilcunda Bass
Star forward Mason McGarrity has led the Warragul Industrials to a top five spot after destroying Kildunca Bass by 97 points.
McGarrity kicked an incredible ten goals as the Dusties won their third in a row, the final score being 22.13 (145) to 7.6 (48).
It wasn't all forward line heroics however, as the defensive improvements the Dusties have made over the first few weeks of the season were evident for all to see.
Indeed, Warragul kept their opponents to just four goals in the first half while McGarrity did as he pleased up the other end.
The Dusties were also served well through the middle of the ground by Kyle Beveridge and Nic Visser, who got on top of the Kilcunda Bass midfield early and did not relent.
Marcus Baxter kicked four goals for the Panthers, but was the only genuine target the visitors had for much of the day as their forward line appeared quite one dimensional at times.
The Dusties appear a much stronger team than the one that was demolished by Tooradin-Dalmore just a few weeks ago, and will look to next week's match against the undefeated Nar Nar Goon as a litmus test to see just how far they've come.
Regardless, Warragul are a serious finals contender this season and will be one to watch in coming weeks.
Warragul's best were Mason McGarrity, Kyle Beveridge, Nic Visser, Matthew Herbert, Will Gibson and Michael Ablett.
Kilcunda Bass' better players were Nathan Foote, Thomas West, Marcus Baxter, Cam McKenzie, Dale Crawford and William Speed.
Cora Lynn vs Korumburra-Bena
Cora Lynn have claimed their first win of season 2022 after completely dismantling Korumburra-Bena by 89 points.
The Cobras never looked troubled in the 18.18 (120) to 4.7 (31) win.
A five goal to nil first term left the Cobras 34 points up at the first change of ends, as their midfield whisked the ball away from the contest at will, leaving their Giants opponents in the dust.
Jaxon Briggs and Nathan Gardiner both kicked four goals each for the home side, who had 10 individual goalkickers in what was a complete team performance.
The win may finally kickstart Cora Lynn's season after an extremely disappointing first five rounds as they showed that they still have enough talent on their list to put a score on the board.
Korumburra-Bena, meanwhile, will go back to the drawing board after failing to back up their own first win of the season last week.
The Giants never looked in the contest, and were unable to move the ball with any kind of flow for much of the day.
They will meet Bunyip next week and will certainly be hoping for a better showing.
Cora Lynn's better performers were Chris Johnson, Jaxon Briggs, Tristan Warkuss, Heath Briggs, Thomas Stiglich and Brady White, while Korumburra-Bena did not name their best.
Dalyston vs Nar Nar Goon
Nar Nar Goon have maintained their perfect record as they easily accounted for Dalyston by 56 points.
The Goon's vast array of forward line options were on full display as they won 11.7 (73) to 2.5 (17).
Mitchell Homfray kicked three goals, and was well supported by Brendan Hermann, Matthew Homfray, Troy McDermott and Dermott Yawney who all kicked two each.
Dalyston didn't fire a shot in the early proceedings as the Goon held them scoreless for the entire first quarter, and kept them to just one goal for the first three quarters.
The win leaves Nar Nar Goon second on the ladder as one of three undefeated teams in the competition, though their match next week against a surging Warragul Industrials may provide them with their first true challenge for the year.
For Dalyson life gets even harder as a daunting away trip to face the mighty Phillip Island awaits.
Nar Nar Goon's best were James Cairns, Brendan Hermann, Trent Armour, Sam Blackwood, Matthew Homfray and Brent Hughes.
Hayden Wallis, Louis Armstrong, Lachlan Wright, Jye Loughridge, Michael Marotta and Clay Tait were Dalyston's stronger players.
Garfield vs Tooradin-Dalmore
Another week, another thumping for Garfield as they succumbed to Tooradin-Dalmore by 126 points.
The Stars were once again held to an exceedingly low score in their 4.8 (32) to 24.14 (158) loss.
The game didn't start well for the home team, as they were held goalless while the Seagulls put on four goals of their own.
If the first quarter hadn't been ideal then the second quarter was an unmitigated disaster, with Tooradin-Dalmore booting 13 goals to one to take a 97-point lead into half time and putting the game well and truly beyond doubt.
Garfield were a little more competitive in the second half, kicking three goals to Tooradin-Dalmore's seven, but with the margin so large it hardly mattered.
Stewart Scanlon kicked eight for the Seagulls, while Julian Suarez added four of his own in display that showed the sheer depth that Tooradin-Dalmore has all around the ground.
Depth, as it turns out, is something that Garfield could certainly use about now as they find themselves winless and anchored to the bottom of the table.
The effort of the Stars is clearly there, but they simply appear lacking in talent, particularly in the forward line which is struggling to score on a regular basis.
Garfield's better players were Joel Batson, Jonty Bow, Lachlan Sauze, Jonathan Sauze, Zach Dalton and Andrew Fitzpatrick.
Tooradin-Dalmore's strongest performers were Stewart Scanlon, James Trezise, Piva Wright, Julian Suarez, Lewis Hill and Brady Egan.
Inverloch-Kongwak vs Bunyip
Bunyip have lost for the second week in a row, falling to Inverloch-Kongwak by 59 points.
The loss sees the Bulldogs now out of the top five as they went down 6.10 (46) to 15.15 (105).
The margin ended up flattering Bunyip a little given they were held to just one goal for the first three quarters of the match.
In that same time the Sea Eagles piled on 12 goals of their own before easing off in the last quarter, confident that the job was finished.
Bunyip weren't totally bereft of chances either, but simply lacked their forward line power that Inverloch-Kongwak boasts.
Oscar Toussaint and William Turner both booted four goals for the Sea Eagles, while Tristan Van Driel chipped in with three of his own.
Bunyip had some solid performances through the middle of the ground from Riley Rundell and Ryan Quirk, but it wasn't enough to stop Inverloch-Kongwak, who have now turned their home ground into somewhat of a fortress and a scary prospect for visiting teams.
Inverloch-Kongwak's best were Shem Hawking, Oscar Toussaint, Thomas Wyatt, Dylan Clark, Lachlan Johnson and Lachlan Scott, while Riley Rundell, Ryan Quirk, William Papley, Dylan Cann and Dylan Quirk played well for Bunyip.
Koo wee rup vs Phillip Island
Koo wee rup have mounted a brave challenge before running out of energy against Phillip Island, losing by 46 points.
The final margin did not tell the full tale as the young Demons took it right up to their vaunted opponents, staying in touch with the undefeated Bulldogs until a last quarter blitz saw the visitors blow the margin out.
Koo wee rup started quite positively, kicking two goals to one in the first team to lead at the first change of ends.
And while Phillip Island settled in and took the lead in the second quarter, the Demons never made it easy for them, keeping in touch every time the Bulldogs threatened to pull away.
Phillip Island looked a little off from their usual selves, missing kicks and dropping marks they'd usually take, though this was in large part thanks to the immense pressure Koo wee rup were putting on them.
Indeed, going into the final term the Demons were only down by six points in what looked like it could be one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history.
It wasn't to be, however, as Phillip Island found another gear in the final term, kicking 5.11 to 0.1 to blow the tired Demons out of the water, poor accuracy being the only thing that stopped the margin growing even larger.
Jason Wells kicked two goals for the home team, while Jordy Patullo kicked four for the visitors.
Despite the final margin, the Demons would still take plenty out of a performance that was full of heart, and will look to next week's match against the winless Garfield with a lot of confidence.
Nathan Voss, Cosi Anagnostou, Matthew Voss, Nathan Muratore, Mitchell Davey and Archie Whitta were named as Koo wee rup's best.
Daniel Pearce, Jaymie Youle, Mark Griffin, Zak Vernon, Eli RIchards and Cameron Pedersen were Phillip Island's top players.
