Gippsland League Round 2 Preview
5 min read

Round two of the Gippsland League is here, and after a few tight tussles in round one some teams will be out to keep the good times rolling, while others are out for redemption. Here's how this week's games are shaping up:

Maffra vs Bairnsdale
Time: 2:20pm
Location: Maffra Recreation Reserve
It was business as usual for Maffra in round one as the league's perennial finallists easily took care of Drouin, as they now turn their attention to a very winnable round two match-up.
The Eagles find themselves coming up against 2021 cellar dweller Bairnsdale as they look to continue their high-scoring form, led in round one by Daniel Bedggood (four goals) and Mitchell Bennett (four goals).
Bairnsdale, meanwhile, will be ruing a missed opportunity as they led fellow 2021 struggler Morwell for most of their round one game before conceding three goals to one in the final quarter to lose what would have been an uplifting victory.
The Redlegs may just find things to be much harder in week two against a stingy Maffra defence that managed to restrict Drouin to just two goals, and will be even more up against it considering they have lost their last 10 games against the Eagles.
Bairnsdale should be a competitive team in this year's competition, but an away game against the might of Maffra will likely prove to be too much for the Redlegs.

Morwell vs Moe
Time: 2:20pm
Location: Morwell Recreation Reserve
Fresh off a round one victory, Morwell will be welcoming back its home fans in round two as it meets local rivals Moe in what promises to be fiery clash.
The Tigers, following a lean 2021, will be happy to have started the new season with a win, as they seek to test themselves against one of the competition's stronger teams in Moe.
The Lions, for their part, handled their round one clash against Warragul in professional fashion, absorbing the pressure of the Gulls in the first half before pulling away in the second and showing their class.
Particularly pleasing for the Lions was their ability to hit the scoreboard even with the loss of goalkicking machine Kristian Jaksch, with Harrison Pepper instead giving the Warragul defenders headaches with five goals.
Morwell will be buoyed by their win in round one but on paper will find Moe a very difficult opponent to overcome.

Sale vs Leongatha
Time: 2:20pm
Location: Sale Oval
Two of the premiership fancies meet in round two, as Sale plays host to Leongatha in a game that should tell us something early about where these clubs sit in the premiership race.
Sale missed a chance in round one to stamp their authority on this year's competition, having led Wonthaggi for most of their match before conceding four goals to two in the last quarter to go down by eight points.
It should be noted however that Wonthaggi were particularly inaccurate that day, kicking 17 behinds in a performance that likely could have had them running away with the match had they kicked straighter.
Despite this, the Magpies will give themselves a strong chance against a Leongatha side that was the benchmark team of the competition in 2021.
The Parrots, as they have managed to do for so long now, found another gear when they were in trouble last week, kicking three goals to one to overcome a plucky Traralgon at home.
Leongatha will take a lot of confidence out of their recent record against the Magpies, having won nine of their last 10 meetings, including five straight at Sale's home ground.
Sale will give themselves every chance to win this, but Leongatha seems likely to prove themselves too strong once again.

Drouin vs Traralgon
Time: 2:20pm
Location: Drouin Recreation Reserve
This game was originally schedules to be played at Traralgon, however due to recent flood damage to the Traralgon facilities it will instead be played at Drouin.
Drouin found the going very tough in round one, as they struggled to cover their off-season losses in a two goal performance against Maffra.
Having lost many of their senior players, including best and fairest Eddie Morris, the Hawks had a very fresh looking side on the field and will be hoping to see some improvement from them in round two.
Whatever improvement they show, however, may not be enough against Traralgon, who will be out for redemption after coming agonisingly close to beating Leongatha last week.
The Maroons led the premiership favourites for most of that game, led by the class of players like Tom Schneider and David Brinker-Ritchie, before falling just short in a thrilling contest.
Even still, Traralgon will take confidence out that loss that they can match it with the best, and should feel a lot of confidence against a Drouin team that is in desperate need of some of their own.

Warragul vs Wonthaggi
Time: 2:20pm
Location: Western Park
The town of Warragul has been buzzing this week as the town welcomes back the Gulls to their home ground for the first time this season.
Warragul certainly didn't lose many admirers in the round one loss to Moe, as they put in a very competitive effort against one of the league's top performers of the last few years.
Things don't get much easier for Warragul though, as they come up against one of the premiership favourites in Wonthaggi.
The Power didn't have it all their way against Sale last week, overcoming a slow start and some inaccurate goalkicking to overwhelm their opponents in the last quarter.
Wonthaggi will take a lot of confidence out of the last time they met Warragul, where they demolished the helpless Gulls to the tune of 104 points.
A closer result should be expected this time around, especially with some of Warragul's newer recruits bolstering the rebuilding side, but a victory for the Gulls in this game would be a surprise.
