In one of the most dominant Baw Baw Squash Club grand finals in recent years the Scorchers proved too hot for the Thunder to handle.
In the first match, which was expected to be close, Karl Ross of the Scorchers could not do a thing wrong.
His unfortunate opponent, Bruce Bowering, had no means of stopping him.
Bruce's deep lobs were volleyed down the wall. His tight shots were met with even better ones to the back of the court, and planned drop shots did not eventuate because Karl outmanoeuvred him.
Final game scores of 15-5, 15-4, 15-4 to Karl illustrate how commanding his performance was. His efforts in getting his team off to a powerful start earnt him the 'player of the grand final' award.
The second match between Tom Ciz and Clio Milsome proved to be a similar mismatch.
As with his teammate Karl, Tom's agility enabled him to keep returning Clio's shots. T
ime and again he was able to control the front court resulting in multiple winners.
Despite some low, hard and tight returns of serve that gained many of her points, Clio was always under pressure from Tom's excellent placement.
The games scores of 15-7, 15-4, 15-6 in favour of Tom showed his complete control.
At this point the Scorchers had a six games to zero and a 90 points to 30 lead, and the contest was virtually over.
However, it required just one more game from the Scorchers in order for them to take the title.
Daniel Meyer for the Thunder had enormous pressure on him to try to prevent his opponent, Tim Kubale, from winning a game. It wasn't to be.
In a match of desperation, long rallies, and great court coverage which was exciting to watch, Daniel gave his all, but it was Tim's better shot placement that ultimately proved the difference.
Again, the match was over in three games, and again it was the Scorchers' player - Tim - who prevailed 15-9, 15-9, 15-6.
The final match was a dead rubber, but that didn't stop the Thunder's Andrew Holden from trying to salvage some respectability for his team.
He was able to do so convincingly with a 15-5, 15-11, 15-5 win over Scott McArdle.
In a game dominated by power, the speed of both players and their ability to control the placement of their shots once reaching the ball was a joy to behold.
Again, Scott's low margin for error resulted in a number of shots hitting the tin but overall it was Andrew's ability to vary the pace of his shots, which enabled good depth followed by well-executed drop shots, that gave him the advantage.
For winning all his finals matches and leading his team to the grand final, Andrew was awarded the prize for 'player of the finals series.'
In other awards for the season, Mike Griffith was the 'most consistent player' for winning all his matches and Justin Duffy took out the 'most improved player' having moved up from a level four player to the top of level three. Well done to all awardees.
Grading night for the summer competition is this Thursday October 26. Interested players are requested to attend or, if unavailable, to contact Dave on 0408 577 398.
