Remembrance Day program in Baw Baw

Communities throughout Baw Baw Shire will mark Remembrance Day on Saturday with services and wreath laying at local war memorials.
Services will be held at Warragul, Drouin, Longwarry, Neerim South, Trafalgar and Thorpdale.
Wreath laying without formal services also are arranged at memorials and cenotaphs at Aberfeldy, Erica, Hill End, Narracan East, Walhalla, Willow Grove, Yarragon, Darnum, Neerim, Neerim East, Neerim North, Noojee and Jindivick.
Initiated in 1918 and then called Armistice Day the annual commemoration marked the end of World 1 and paid tribute to those that had lost their lives as a result of the conflict.
After World War 2 it was re-titled in British Commonwealth countries as Remembrance Day and, in Australia, now commemorates the loss of Australians in all conflicts.
At Warragul, Saturday's hour long service at the town memorial at the junction of Victoria and Smith Sts will start at 10.20am with the Warragul RSL Pipes and Drums opening and closing proceedings that will include wreath laying, the Ode and Last Post, one minute's silence and an address by Nikola Grbic.
A local resident, Nikola served in the army from 2003 to 2012, and represents the relevance of the day to the younger generation of service personnel more than a century after World War 1.
At other locations in the shire where services will be held the starting times are 10am at Thorpdale, 10.45am at Drouin and Neerim South and 11am at Longwarry and Trafalgar.
