Potential of hemp growing examined

A state parliamentary committee is to look into the benefits of an expanded hemp industry.
The Legislative Council's economy and infrastructure committee will inquire into the cost and environmental benefits for Victoria and the issues, barriers and opportunities within the industry.
Committee chair Georgie Purcell of the Animal Justice Party said hemp can be used in a range of products with it grown on 169 hectares in the state by six farmers.
She said hemp can be used for products including textiles, apparel, animal fodder, food and the nutrition industry, construction materials, fibre panels, insulation, biofuels and bioplastics.
The committee would like to hear from experts in the industry, current and potential growers and those interested in product development.
Ms Purcell said it would also look into environmental benefits and if the industry could help reduce Victoria's carbon emissions.
Public submissions are invited at the committee's website until 4 with a final report, including recommendations, to be submitted to parliament by November 15.
