Fires across Gippsland last week have prompted local police to urge residents to be vigilant about their preparedness for fire.
Baw Baw police services area inspector David Fyfe said an early fire season was upon us and "it is up to us now."
"If you live in a rural location now is the time to review fire plans," he said.
While fire and emergency service authorities have been warning of a high risk fire season ahead, last weeks threat to several Gippsland communities saw the warning become reality.
Insp Fyfe said if property owners were planning to burn-off they needed to consult with local government and the CFA to ensure their burns were legal and safe.
Fire restrictions were introduced yesterday in East Gippsland and Wellington shires and other municipalities will be assessed regularly.
