No need for the children to be bored during the school holidays that kicked off yesterday.
They can go fishing at Garfield - specifically at Garfield Lake - for some 250 rainbow trout that have been released in time for the holidays by the Victorian Fisheries Authority.
It has been happening for years but the lake's whereabout is a mystery for many, even the locals.
That question has been raised on the internet, too, and has been answered by a couple of local residents.
One said he'd lived in the area for years and it took him "ages to find it" with most Garfield people not knowing it's there.
He says the lake is behind the football ground (southern end) and since he discovered where it is has caught plenty of stocked rainbow trout on "spinners" and has seen gold fish, carp and turtles as well.
It is apparent on Google Maps, although the lake is bizarrely titled "Garfield Beach."
Minister for outdoor recreation Steve Dimopoulos said 35,000 catchable size rainbow trout were being released in 80 lakes ahead of the current school holidays and those scheduled in September to make sure "Victoria's little anglers can get hooked on a new hobby these winter schools holidays."
He said the 95,000 of the government's "Little Angler Kits" had been delivered to every grade five students to enable more young anglers to try their luck at their local lake.
But there are some limitations.
There is a daily limit of five trout and only two can exceed 35 centimetres in length.
Mr Dimopoulos said that in Gippsland rainbow trout have also been released in lakes at Sale, Churchill, Heyfield, Pakenham and Morwell.
