Work on installing a new sewer main to cope with residential growth in Warragul's north-east is due to begin within weeks.
Gippsland Water said the upgrade to a larger pipeline would be along a 1.5 kilometre stretch from the town's wastewater treatment plant to Stoddarts Rd.
A contract for the $7-million project was awarded late last year.
Managing director Sarah Cumming said work would start within the treatment plat boundary and progress northwards within expected completion in 2025.
"We always look ahead and plan for the future to determine what services our customers will need and when," Ms Cumming said.
She said the current sewer main was built in 1971 when there were fewer homes and businesses in the area to be served and it was essential for the network to be able to withstand the pressures of population growth, rainfall variability and climate change.
The new main would also reduce the risks of spills and mains failures.
Ms Cumming said during construction traffic management would be in place on roads at various times.
