A police car has been hit while following a stolen car around West Gippsland.
Drouin police were alerted to a vehicle, previously stolen from a truck in Melbourne, in the Baw Baw police services area on Thursday.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen from the back of a truck and had reached speeds up to 130km/h while travelling through the area.
Multiple police units were following the vehicle, which turned onto Waterloo Rd in Yarragon and continued toward Trafalgar, allegedly reaching speeds up to 170km/h.
Once in Trafalgar, police followed the car to the Thorpdale Rd area.
Police were placing stop sticks on the road when the car did a U-turn and came towards them.
It is alleged the driver, a 28-year-old Newborough man, attempted to avoid police and collided with the front of a police van.
Police arrested the man at the collision scene.
He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and other related offences.
He has been bailed to appear at Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court at a later date.
