Two collisions occurred within half an hour of each other in Yarragon and Trafalgar Tuesday morning last week, causing major traffic delays travelling east.
The first incident was a single-car collision at 7am when a car travelling east on the Princes Hwy in Yarragon veered into a barrier on the right side of the road. Police said the vehicle bounced back after hitting the barrier, causing the driver to lose control and travelled onto the median strip, eventually landing upside down.
The driver, a 67-year-old Loch Sport man was trapped upside down in the car and had to be removed by emergency services. There also was a dog in the car, which was not injured.
The driver suffered a head laceration and was taken to Dandenong hospital for observation.
Police said the collision may have been caused by a medical episode.
The second collision was between two large vehicles about half an hour later on the Princes Hwy eastbound lanes between Rankins Rd and Whittons Rd.
Police said a Hino tipper truck towing a wood chipper on a trailer was turning right onto the Princes Hwy when an Izuzu truck allegedly collided with the trailer and swerved, hitting a nearby barrier on the left side of the road.
Both drivers were injured. A 52-year-old East Burwood man was trapped in his vehicle for about two hours before being cut free and airlifted to a hospital in Melbourne in a serious condition.
