A planting of saplings on the banks of a river that is a source of water for Gippsland Water customers is helping to avoid erosion while reducing pumping costs.
More than 8000 native trees and shrubs planted on the banks of the Tanjil River at Tanjil South last August are thriving with managing director Sarah Cumming saying there was already a noticeable difference in the riverbank's appearance.
She said as the plants grew their root systems would help hold the riverbanks together and prevent debris entering the river and ultimately avoid costly blockages to pumps.
The impact has been to reduce the blockages, enhance biodiversity and improve the overall health of the Tanjil River.
Seven native species were planted including Strzelecki gums, Australian blackwoods and silver wattles.
