Reduce number plate theft
For a $5 donation, local residents can reduce the risk of becoming the next victim of registration plate theft.
To combat a rise in these thefts, Baw Baw Neighbourhood Watch will join with Warragul SES to run "Operation Safe Plate" on Saturday.
Held from 9am to 12.30pm in the Bunnings carpark in Warragul, volunteers will install anti-theft screws on vehicles for a $5 donation. These screws can be installed quickly and easily but a special tool is required for removal, reducing the risk of registration plate theft.
Operation Safe Plate has resulted in special one-way screws being installed on thousands of vehicles across its 20-year history. It is normally held twice a year.
Victoria Police said it was expensive to replace stolen vehicle registration plates, which could be used by criminals to commit other crimes.
The top tips to prevent number plate theft are: secure your plates with anti-theft screws or pop rivets; and, park in a secure or well-lit area.
Funds raised from Operation Safe Plate will be split between Baw Baw Neighbourhood Watch and Warragul SES.
