A man who initiated establishment of a prostate cancer support group in Warragul earlier this year has been recognised nationally for his efforts over a number of years.
Linton Blackwell, who is now retired and living at Moe, received the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia's prestigious Max Gardner Award for his previous service to a support group at Bairnsdale as well as initiating a similar group at Warragul after identifying a need for it in the area and which met for the first time last March.
The Warragul group now has about 20 members that have had, or have, prostate cancer and their partners.
The PCFA said the prestigious award recognised "distinguished service by a member that has made a significant impact on prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners and families".
Mr Blackwell describes himself as an 11-year survivor of the disease that he said he received as "a 60th birthday present".
He stresses the importance of men getting tested.
Mr Blackwell said all men were susceptible to prostate cancer, especially those where there is a family history.
He said he has three brothers and two nephews that have been diagnosed with the disease.
All men should get tested from the time they reach 60 years of age and for those with a family history from 40 years, Mr Blackwell stated, adding that support groups for fellow sufferers and their families were an important part of recovery.
