Have an alternate water supply
Gippsland Water is reminding customers to include an alternate water source in their bushfire plans this summer.
It follows the early introduction of the fire danger period across Baw Baw, South Gippsland and Latrobe City municipalities last month, and Cardinia Shire earlier this month.
Gippsland Water said reticulated water systems were not designed for firefighting purposes and, during bushfire events, may experience reduced or no pressure and could be damaged by fire.
Alternate water sources could include water tanks, dams, swimming pools, wheelie bins or 200-litre drums.
Customers also were encouraged to store at least three litres of fresh drinking water per person, enough to last up to three days in case of emergency.
If water or wastewater services were interrupted during a bushfire, Gippsland Water said it aimed to notify customers as soon as possible via its website, SMS and social media channels.
