Longwarry resident Shauna Evans is calling for donations of food and essential items to assist flood victims.
A drop-off point for donations will be open tomorrow (Wednesday) at Longwarry Recreation Reserve between 2pm and 5pm.
Initially hoping to gather a few care packages, Ms Evans said the appeal had grown significantly in just days and welcomed any volunteers keen to lend a hand.
“My goal was (to help) those who literally lost everything, but we have opened it to helping those who have been impacted in any way, shape or form.”
Ms Evans said food items required included long-life milk, soup, tinned fruit, cereal, cups of noodles, biscuits, soup, tea, coffee, sugar sachets and bottled water. Donations of essentials such as wipes, tissues, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, soap, hand cream and hand sanitiser are also welcome.
“It’s the little things that make big impacts,” she said. “No matter how big or small your drop off is, it’s all very appreciated and welcomed.”
Ms Evans has also asked donors to write a positive note to help make somebody’s day.
But the appeal is not accepting money, clothing or toys due to other agencies offering this support, such as Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund and Salvation Army.
Ms Evans doesn’t have family or friends impacted and her only link was her husband getting stuck by floodwaters whilst travelling near Traralgon.
“I guess I saw what was happening around and saw the impact it was having on people,” she said of her inspiration to start the appeal. “Everyone was still trying to get their head around it. Now the dust has settled, everyone has been able to jump on board.”
Items collected at Longwarry will be distributed to flood victims in the Latrobe Valley via Latrobe City Council.
Ms Evans is also coordinating a collection point in Officer in partnership with a Pakenham SES volunteer to assist flood victims in the Dandenong Ranges, Casey and Cardinia.
