Junior footballers in the Ellinbank and District Football League were back on field on the weekend, with all teams determined to strike big ahead of finals.
With only three games left, it’s shaping up to be a tight finish to the 2021 season for the u18.5’s.
In a surprising upset, the Poowong juniors got up early against Neerim-Neerim South, staying in front for the whole game and winning by 10 points. Poowong’s Alex Henshall and Benjamin Brasier kicked two goals each and were among best on ground.
It was a disappointing result for Ellinbank, who managed a respectable 6.8 (44) against top side Longwarry 7.10 (52). Longwarry continues their win-streak, losing only one game this season.
Buln Buln proved a top three team when they defeated Trafalgar by a convincing 8.14 (62) to 4.2 (26). The Buln Buln u18.5’s will have a tough one next week against Longwarry.
Lang Lang had a bye round.
Poowong now sits number five on the ladder and will battle for higher ranking against Ellinbank and Trafalgar, who are all sitting at four wins and six losses.
In the u16.5’s, it went the other way for Poowong who were defeated convincingly by top of the table Neerim-Neerim South.
Jarrod Meggetto kicked eight goals for NNS, contributing to their 20.10 (130) win against Poowong’s 4.5 (29).
Ellinbank were the dominant side against Longwarry in a low scoring match, scoring 5.9 (39) to Longwarry’s 3.5 (23).
Buln Buln and Catani battled for a win. Buln Buln got up in the first quarter by two points, but a desperate Catani kept them scoreless into the second. Shared goals from Catani’s forward lines kept the u16.5’s ahead for the rest of the game, with a final score of 7.9 (51) to Buln Buln’s 4.8 (32).
Yarragon had a bye round and take on Buln Buln this weekend.
