Hydroponic trial bears fruit

At the beginning of the first term, year 6 agriculture and horticulture students at Chairo Christian School’s Drouin Campus began investigating the possibility of growing a hydroponic garden.

They researched the benefits and the complexities and decided to give it a go.

Engagement was at an all-time high for the entire term as the students completed concept drawing, purchased components and started turning their plans into reality.

After using a variety of tools and a whole lot of problem solving to construct the vertical garden, the students excitedly planted the seedlings in cups they had also designed.

They then carefully added the correct amount of nutrients for productivity, turned the pump on and stood back to watch what happened.

At first, they were very excited to find the plants didn’t die! Then they were stunned and delighted when the vegetables started to grow at a phenomenal rate.

They planted their vegies in the last week of the first term and were eating them the first week of the second term.

The snow peas were delicious and the lettuces, herbs and cabbages are thriving.

The students were excited to find that, with research and a little hard work, their idea could come to fruition.
