EPA shuts down recycling site

EPA Victoria has formally shut down the Meluca Recycling transfer station in Weerong Rd, Drouin by revoking its registration.

The EPA stated the site was no longer permitted to accept waste, and it was unlawful for residents or businesses to deposit waste at the facility.

EPA Gippsland regional manager Jessica Bandiera said the decision followed ongoing non-compliance with conditions of the site's registration. 

"EPA has taken this action after the operator failed to meet the strict requirements necessary to continue operating the facility,"  Ms Bandiera said.

"We continue to monitor the site through regular inspections and are using our regulatory powers to require the operator to address ongoing environmental risks and comply with Victoria's environmental laws," she said.
Ms Bandiera said EPA remained focused on ensuring environmental and human health risks associated with the site were managed, including potential impacts of fire, odour, dust and contaminated runoff.
EPA is considering further enforcement action, which may include additional notices, fines or court action.  
"EPA won't hesitate to take strong action including removing the ability to operate in cases like this, where risks to the environment and community are not managed and permission conditions are not met," Ms Bandiera said.
Residents and businesses should use alternative waste disposal facilities, including those listed on the Baw Baw Shire Council website.
Kerbside waste collection services remain unaffected.
