Four goals to one in the third quarter helped their cause, winning 7-7 (49) to 4-8 (32) in a low scoring affair.
Seven goals to one after quarter time helped Buln Buln comfortably account for Nilma-Darnum, 10-17 (77) to 3-7 (25).
It saw the Lyrebirds score their third win and move within four points of the seventh-placed Bombers.
Other matches saw big margins as sides in the top six further consolidated their positions.
Neerim-Neerim South kept in finals contention with a thumping win over Nyora, 20-7 (127) to 0-3 (3).
Kyle Salerno booted nine goals for the home side.
Ellinbank join the ladder leading Lang Lang on seven wins after easily disposing of Poowong, 22-16 (148) to 2-0 (12). Lachie Spinks steered through 10 majors for the Eagles.
Ten final quarter goals put an exclamation point on Longwarry's victory over Catani, kicking away to win 22-15 (147) to 4-1 (25).
Scoring was shared around in an impressive performance by the Crows, netting them their sixth victory.
Trafalgar also made it six wins for the season, comfortably accounting for Yarragon 12-8 (80) to 0-1 (1).
BUNYIP may have only one win for the season in the under 18s, but they pushed fourth-placed Lang Lang all the way in signs the competition is tightening.
Facing a final change deficit following a third quarter Bulldogs surge, the Tigers steadied with the final two goals to pinch the result.
The Tigers came from behind to win 5-9 (39) to 5-6 (36).
Nilma-Darnum and Buln Buln played out a finals like contest between first and third.
The Bombers remain undefeated, but were made to work for the 6-7 (43) to 4-8 (32) result.
Trafalgar kept in touch with the top five, overcoming a determined Yarragon 4-13 (37) to 2-9 (21) in challenging conditions.
Catani held its position in the top five, comfortably accounting for Longwarry 12-12 (84) to 8-5 (53).
The Blues overcame early inaccuracy with eight goals to three in the second half.
Ellinbank comfortably accounted for Poowong to keep in touch with the ladder leading Bombers, winning 11-16 (82) to 2-3 (15).
THE top four in the under 16 competition further consolidated with comfortable victories.
Catani comfortably accounted for Longwarry to move to seventh in a tight race between the bottom five teams.
The Blues peppered away to win 8-22 (70) to 4-2 (26).
Buln Buln overcame Nilma-Darnum in a low scoring affair, winning 5-12 (42) to 2-5 (17).
Yarragon comfortably accounted for Trafalgar for its only football win of the day, winning 8-7 (55) to 2-6 (18).
Poowong continue to show promise, winning every quarter to defeat Ellinbank 10-5 (65) to 3-2 (20).
Bunyip were a big winner over the Lang Lang-Nyora combine, scoring 20-26 (146) to 0-2 (2). Archie Whelan booted nine goals in a best afield effort.
