Baw Baw Shire has joined 45 other local government areas in Victoria in an agreement to source renewable energy for much of its electricity needs.
Council said that as well as environmental benefits the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO) agreement would reduce power costs with savings reinvested in new sustainability projects.
Under the eight-year partnership agreement council will use renewable energy to power about 6350 street lights and a number of council owned buildings.
They include its Drouin customer service centre, the West Gippsland Arts Centre and other facilities in Warragul's Civic Place, Trafalgar Business Centre, Warragul showgrounds, Drouin recreation reserve and the Trafalgar transfer station and now closed Trafalgar landfill site.
Mayor Michael Leaney said a priority of the community in response to council's wide-ranging public consultation on the future vision for the shire was for eco-friendly, sustainable choices.
He said the 46 councils involved in the contract with Red Energy would source renewable energy from wind farms in Victoria.
The reduction in Victoria's carbon footprint through the agreement would equate to
0taking about 90,000 cars off the road, council stated.
