Longwarry man in custody after 200km/h freeway pursuit

A Longwarry man was remanded in custody after a pursuit extending through four shire areas ended in Sale on Friday morning.

The man has been charged with burglary, theft, firearm and traffic offences.

Police allege the man was travelling at speeds up to 200km/hour along the Princes Fwy.

The Police air wing was flying to an incident in Pakenham when members observed a stolen BMW X5 driving at excessive speeds along the Princes Fwy at about 8.45am.

Baw Baw Police were alerted but were unable to deploy stop sticks along the freeway.

Police said the vehicle was driving dangerously, passing vehicle along the stop lane, on grass verges and driving through the centre of roundabouts.

Air wing police continued to track the vehicle.  Police set up stop sticks at the intersection of Princes Hwy and Lyon St, Rosedale.

The vehicle arrived at Rosedale at about 9.39am but avoided police and continued to travel east towards Sale.

Sale police were in position with stop sticks at the Wurruk Princes Hwy but were again unsuccessful.

The vehicle was intercepted after hitting stop sticks at the Princes Hwy-Dargo St intersection in Sale, with successful deployment puncturing three tyres, slowing the vehicle until it stopped at the Foster and Elgin Sts intersection.

The male allegedly ran from police, jumping the fences of properties in Foster St before being arrested by Wellington police members.

Police seized a firearm, large amount of cash and small amount of drug of dependence.
