Community College Gippsland recently hosted a successful "Uplift" youth day at Burke St Park in Warragul.
The event provided an opportunity for community groups, youth services organisations and businesses to connect with local students and showcase some of the services, activities and careers available to young people across Gippsland. The day was designed to bring people together while engaging in fun and free activities.
The event also called on young Gippslanders aged between 12 to 25 to get together and learn and share ideas on creating a youth friendly Gippsland.
Those attending participated in activities such as art, cultural activities, henna tattooing, first aid care, self care buckets, tai chi. Particularly popular was "Zorb ball" - where people were able to jump into protective blow up bubbles and compete in a soccer like game. Other organisations taking part included Gipps Sport, Artists for kid's culture, Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault and CrimeStoppers.
Students were able to experience "Power Pops'' - a virtual reality tour of wind farms, solar panels and energy storage. The displays highlighted the future of renewable energy and provided students with an understanding of some of the future job opportunities and benefits of the sector to the economy. Students were treated to education on how electricity works with some interactive props to illustrate.
A free barbecue was supplied at the Skills and Jobs Centre Gippsland and cooked by Warragul Rotary Club members.
Organiser Den Lim from Community College Gippsland said the day was an opportunity for young people to engage and collaborate with Gippsland businesses and organisations.
"Uplift has been running for about seven years now and we are growing our membership of organisations every year. It's so great to see youth organisations collaborate to deliver fun and free events for our youth. We received a lot of great feedback with young people enjoying themselves," she said.
