After a busy post-Santa morning many families find by the time lunch is on the table their recyclables bins are already filled, or overflowing, with the packaging and wrapping from their presents.
It is a problem Cardinia Shire council is aware of and for the first time is enabling people to dispose of flattened and dry cardboard and gift wrapping paper without cost.
It will enable people to use their recycling bins for the normal items they dispose of with the next collection after Christmas possibly a fortnight away. The Christmas present packaging can be taken to the recycling transfer station in Exchange Drve, Pakenham, from Wednesday, December 28, until Friday, December 30, between 9am and 4pm.
The service is only available to Cardinia shire residents who must show photo ID with a shire address.
Items that won't be accepted at the transfer station are soft plastic packaging, wet cardboard, plastic wrapping, cellophane, ribbons, bows and Christmas decorations.
