Sunday saw Iona/Koo wee rup's over 60s team downed by Mornington Sharks in a low-scoring but entertaining game of cricket.
Round three of Masters Cricket Victoria action began with Iona/KWR winning the toss and batting; they were 1/10 in the fifth over, when Greg Watsford 1 (15) was run out.
Three runs later Andrew Patterson 2 (17) was lbw to Harrison's bowling. Ron Wernke 8 (25) retired before the total had crawled to 28 by the 15th over.
Iona/KWR lost two wickets on that total as Scott Williams 6 (12) was bowled by Harrison and Mick Scully 8 (20) was caught by Harrison off Wicks' bowling.
Four runs and five overs later Bob Rogers 2 (23) was bowled by Harrison. With score on 34, Harrison took two wickets in two balls, Mark Ahern 1 (6) was stumped by Phil Mayne and Steven Nadj 0 (1) was bowled.
The score was 7/34 in the 23rd over and looked likely that Iona/KWR would struggle to make 50. But Russell Vincent 6, Graham Davey 8, Ross Farmer 7, Russell Ferguson 4, all retired after facing 25 balls.
John Moore was the last man in and he was the only player to reach double figures, scoring 10 off 15 balls before he was judged lbw off Stephenson's bowling in the last over. After 40 overs Iona/KWR finished at 8/73.
This appeared to be another game that would finish early as the Mornington Sharks only needed fewer than two runs an over.
But Iona/KWR had other ideas, as Mornington Sharks were soon 3/13 by the seventh over after Mick Scully bowled both Ian Rowland 3 (15) and Harrington 4 (9).
Scully combined with Russell Vincent to run out Stephenson 5 (13). Mann 1 (8) was another victim of a run out when Ron Wernke and Russell Ferguson combined.
The Sharks were 5/26 in the 11th over when Harrison 2 (6) was lbw to Russell Vincent's bowling.
Wicks 12 (24) was caught by Ron Wernke off Graham Davey's bowling. During a spell of six maidens in a row Lynch 0 (4) was stumped by Russell Ferguson off Mark Ahern's bowling and Mornington Sharks were 7/42 in the 22nd over, only needing 32 runs off 18 overs with only three wickets in hand.
But the over 70s players of the Mornington Sharks team showed the youngsters how to handle pressure.
Dunn 7 (30), Dick Stumbles 3 (30) and Vin Booth 3 (30) all retired after facing 30 balls. This brought Michael Boulton and Phil Mayne to the wicket.
With the score on 73 Michael Boulton 6 (26) was caught by Russell Vincent off Greg Watsford's bowling. After 36.3 overs Phil Mayne 12 (22) hit the winning runs and Mornington Sharks had won an exciting game of cricket
