Details of the lives of those from the district that enlisted in the defence forces in World War I and are buried or memorialised in five local cemeteries are now preserved at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.
Five books that comprise "A Tribute to Those who Served" were presented to the Shrine for its library by the West Gippsland Genealogy Society, a project members have been working at for seven years.
The cemeteries are those at Warragul, Drouin, Drouin West, Yarragon and Neerim.
A thank you from the Shrine after being presented with the books said they showed the painstaking work involved in reconstructing soldier biographies and "helped fulfil the Shrine's commitment to fulfil our commitment to the preservation and interpretation of Victoria's social and military history."
The memory of the WWI personnel from the area including biographical information, brief details of their war records and stories of their lives before and after the war if they returned.
The genealogy society said it considered it an honour to have the series in the Shrine's library that is small and used by staff for research.
Copies of the books are available to the public by contacting www.westgippslandgenealogy.com and can be viewed at its library in the Old Shire Office in Warragul at the corner of Queen and Smith Sts.
The library is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, on the second Saturday of each month between 10am and 3pm and on the fourth Sunday of the month from 2pm to 4pm.
