Warragul resident Grace Fitzgerald will celebrate her 90th birthday on Saturday.
Grace Fitzgerald (nee Anderson) was born on November 26, 1932, at Mt Eccles. Grace's parents were Norman and Myrtle Anderson and she was one of 14 children.
Grace lived a carefree childhood, making her own fun with her siblings. She loved dancing, playing tennis, knitting, reading and cooking.
Grace married Maurice Fitzgerald in 1950 and supported him on their mixed dairy and potato farm at Iona until 2000 when they moved to Warragul.
The last four or five years have thrown many challenges at Grace. She almost died when she caught invasive meningococcal disease in 2018. The family were told to come to say their goodbyes and within an hour 30 turned up.
Grace was then required to undertake two weeks of rehabilitation at Latrobe Regional Hospital to learn to walk again and to do basic tasks in the kitchen.
A highlight after this enormous battle with Meningococcal was Stevie Jacobs from the Today Show 'Knock of Cash' presenting Grace with $10,000. He called her 'Amazing Grace' and told her she was an inspiration to everyone.
Grace was renowned for her baking skills, turning out delicious sponges, jelly slices, apple tarts and scones for every family occasion. Soups and roasts also were her speciality. Now the family do this for her.
After 67 years of marriage, Maurice died in 2018.
Soon after this, Grace had a breast removed, came down with a painful case of shingles and has had several falls requiring hospitalisation.
Grace remains positive and enjoys visits from her seven children, 22 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
