Local disability support groups enjoyed a day at the races recently at Greyhound Racing Victoria's Great Chase event at Warragul Greyhound Racing Club.
GRV chief executive Stuart Laing said the Great Chase concept was a great way for greyhound racing clubs to engage with their communities.
"The Great Chase has been running since 2003 and the initiative has seen Greyhound Racing Victoria and our clubs give about $800,000 to Victoria's disability sector over those 21 years," Laing said.
"The community days are a special part of the concept, and Warragul's (recent event) was a great example of that with 115 people attending from seven local disability support groups. It's a great chance for our local greyhound racing clubs, like the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club, to give back to their communities and put on a free lunch and a day out for Gippsland's disability sector."
Four races were held on the day with groups selecting a dog for each race.
GRV regional promotions lead Brad Williams said the Warragul event saw one of the largest crowds since COVID.
"It was probably our biggest year since COVID," he said. "We had $3000 in prize money to distribute amongst the groups, everyone was able to walk away with at least $100."
The final leader board was determined by a points system.
"Every winning (dog) is worth 10 points, second place is nine points and so on and so forth," Mr Williams said.
"The winner of the day was the Mawarra Centre on 25 points, they took away $1200."
The final leaderboard was:
1st: Mawarra Centre - $1200 – 25pts
2nd: All Abilities - $800 – 22pts
3rd: Headway Gippsland - $500 – 21pts
4th: Life Skills Victoria - $200 – 19pts
5th: Andrews House - $100 – 14pts
6th: Scope Gippsland - $100 – 10pts
7th: RDA Warragul - $100 – 5pts
