General practices in Baw Baw Shire have an opportunity to become a priority primary care centre.
The State Government is funding 25 new GP-led Priority Primary Care Centres (PPCCs) to improve access to primary care, particularly in the after-hours period, and ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.
Gippsland Primary Health Network chief executive officer Amanda Proposch said the initiative would help reduce the pressure on hospital emergency departments.
"We will be working closely with the Victorian Department of Health, Latrobe Regional and West Gippsland Hospitals as well as general practices in establishing these new centres to meet the needs of their respective communities," Ms Proposch said.
The PPCCs will open after hours, partner with emergency departments and provide care for people with conditions that require urgent attention but not an emergency response such as mild infections, fractures and burns. They also will offer pathology and imaging services.
The first five locations, including one in Latrobe, were announced in August. Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas announced another round of funding last week for new centres to open around the state, including Baw Baw.
General practices within the shire are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to open a PPCC. The EOI will closes at 5pm tomorrow, October 26.
