Finals time in Gippsland League
3 min read

It's finals time in the Gippsland League, and with the perfect Leongatha getting the week off it's up to the other four teams to press their case.
A qualifying final will see two of the league's best face off, while an elimination final will see one side's season end by the end of the weekend. Here's how this week's action is shaping up.
Saturday August 27, 2:20pm, qualifying final
Wonthaggi vs Sale
Location: Morwell Recreation Reserve
Second meets third in the qualifying final, with the winner to face off against Leongatha next week and the loser consigned to do things the hard way against the winner of the elimination final.
Wonthaggi, Sale and Traralgon were the three sides vying with one all year with one another to grab a top three spot underneath Leongatha, with the Power and the Magpies ultimately coming out on top.
If recent history is anything to go by, this should be a thrilling contest. Wonthaggi may have won the past three matches between the two sides, but the biggest margin in that time has been just 18 points.
Their last meeting, played back in round 10, resulted in an incredible one-point victory to the Power, who will be hoping things aren't so stressful this time.
Wonthaggi come into the game having not been defeated through their last six games, while Sale would be coming in on a similar streak if not for their loss last week to Morwell.
The Magpies will be majorly boosted though thanks to the return of league superstar Shannen Lange, while the inclusions of Ryan Sparkes and Jarryd Blair will improve the Power's chances.
If this game is dominated by the big men, Sale will likely have the firepower to win out, but if Wonthaggi can limit their influence it will go a long way.
Either way, the winner of this one will be primed to try and be the team that finally takes it up to Leongatha. The Parrots may not have lost during the season but no team is unbeatable, as both these sides will be keen to prove in the race for the premiership.
Sunday August 28, 2:20pm, elimination final
Traralgon vs Morwell
Location: Traralgon Showgrounds
Having officially earned their place in the 2022 finals series, Morwell will be out to show they're not here to make up the numbers as they face off in a sudden death match with Traralgon.
The Tigers had to do it the hard way by upsetting Sale, but thanks to some incredible efforts by their senior players they managed it, and in the process ended Maffra's 20-plus year streak of making finals.
And if that gave them any confidence, so will the last time they faced Traralgon. The Tigers, playing on the same enemy territory they'll find themselves on this weekend, took it right up to the Maroons with some ferocious football, not only winning that game but sending a message to the rest of the competition that they meant business.
It means that despite Traralgon's lofty goals for this year, they face a serious danger game here.
The Maroons have at times appeared one of the strongest sides in the league, even taking it right up to Leongatha on two occasions, but shock losses like the one against the Tigers ultimately cruelled them to fourth position. They'll still be going into this one as favourites, and will still back themselves even against higher-ranked opposition, but if they want to win the flag they'll have to do it the hard way.
Either way this will be an intriguing game for fans, who will be in for a treat.
