Eagles and Cats battle for EDFNL grand final berth
2 min read

Will it be Ellinbank or Neerim-Neerim South playing Buln Buln for the Ellinbank and District senior football premiership?
Saturday's preliminary final at Lang Lang will decide the grand final line-up.
Ellinbank, coming off a loss, will need to lift as they face a red-hot Cats who have easily sailed through two knock-out finals.
The Eagles remained a chance in a low-scoring affair against Buln Buln on the weekend, only trailing by 15 points at the final change.
However, the minor premiership winning Lyrebirds broke it open in the final quarter, to win by 27 points and book their place in the grand final.
On the other hand, Neerim-Neerim South led Trafalgar from go to whoa, displaying their immense talent on the way to crushing their opponents by 81 points.
The reigning premiers are no doubt in form and playing inspired footy.
Despite finishing the season in fourth and having to advance "the hard way", the Cats will be very confident heading into the preliminary final.
Ellinbank will take confidence that they also enjoyed a comfortable 43-point win over Trafalgar just a fortnight ago.
The teams have split the results this season. Ellinbank had an 8.5-53 to 5.11-40 win in round five and Neerim-Neerim South a 12.18-90 to 8.8-56 win in round 17.
Both teams have key experienced personnel missing or in doubt - Chris Urie having missed for the past month for the Cats and Adam Cook looking to have been injured on Saturday for the Eagles.
The team's leading goalkickers - Shaun Phelan for Ellinbank and Luke Kinder for Neerim-Neerim South - also failed to really fire on the weekend, with Phelan kicking one and Kinder left goalless. However, look for both players to light it up in the preliminary.
For the Eagles, youngsters Ryan Atherton and Bryce Joyce have been consistent and vital to their success.
Whilst for the Cats, they will be looking for back-to-back big games from Ayden Ramm and Kody Wilson.
The sandy Lang Lang deck is not Ellinbank's favourite venue. This may swing the neutral observer into backing in the Cats to set up a grand final re-match with the Lyrebirds.
But, with a grand final appearance on the line, anything can happen.
