Bunyip’s big chance in West Gippsland footy
4 min read

by Nicholas Duck
It's round 13 of the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition this week, with a number of local teams travelling away as they hunt the four points.
Bunyip will be looking at their best chance for a win all year, while Warragul Industrials will bring the fight to the reigning premiers.
Korumburra Bena vs Bunyip
It's no secret that it's been an extremely tough season for Bunyip, but an opportunity awaits this week as they head to Korumburra.
The Bulldogs and Giants have been the two bottom teams in the competition for most of the year, with the one win between them coming in their game back in round one.
The Giants prevailed in that match in a hard-fought war of attrition, but haven't come close to tasting victory since.
For Bunyip this is almost a do or die game given this could very well be their best chance for a win this season - lose and a winless season becomes a very real, if not likely, possibility.
Can the youthful Bulldogs take their chance?
Tooradin-Dalmore vs Warragul Industrials
For the second time in as many weeks, Warragul Industrials will be taking on a genuine premiership contender when they travel away to face Tooradin-Dalmore.
The Dusties were brave in defeat against Inverloch-Kongwak last week, only truly losing control of the contest late as the ladder leaders showed their class.
Things don't get that much easier as they head away to play the reigning premiers for the second time this year.
Their first meeting was another honourable defeat, where the Dusties gave the Seagulls a hell of a scare before succumbing to a two-goal loss.
They'll be out to turn the tables this time, and for the first time in a long while, Tooradin-Dalmore look vulnerable.
Two losses in a row has competition asking questions of the reigning premiers - are they still the all-conquering team that romped their way to a drought-breaking flag last year? Or are the cracks beginning to show?
Should they knock off a danger game like this in a big way those questions may be alleviated for the time being.
The Dusties still aren't guaranteed their finals position as Dalyston and Kilcunda Bass continue to breathe down their neck, but a scalp here would go a long way if they can manage it.
Cora Lynn vs Nar Nar Goon
Fifth hosts fourth as Cora Lynn faces off with Nar Nar Goon in what will be one of the games of the round.
Just two points separate the two as things stand, and while a double chance looks out of reach for both the prospect of a home final would be enticing.
For that to happen though they would need to finish in third or fourth, making this a vital clash.
The Cobras come into this one having taken care of business against Kilcunda Bass and Dalyston.
Both wins were expected, and while they were more difficult than they needed to be at times, they managed to tick off both boxes.
Nar Nar Goon, meanwhile, are one of the form teams of the competition.
Since round six the Goon have reeled off six straight wins by an average margin of 85 points.
Their last loss, however? Well that was a narrow defeat at home to none other than Cora Lynn.
All eyes will be on this one, with the winner sure to have boosted their position in the pecking order.
Other games
Garfield faces a monumental challenge when they head away to take on Inverloch-Kongwak.
The Stars have been an improved unit this year and were more happy to record their third win last week.
But the undefeated ladder leaders are going to be a whole other, and much more challenging, task.
It might be a case of just trying to minimise the damage.
Dalyston will look to keep in touch with the top six when they play Koo wee rup.
The Magpies are caught in a death spiral - having begun the year five and two, they've now come undone in their last five games, and have fallen out of the top six.
A response is needed, particularly as they were caught unprepared by the Demons in their round one encounter, where they lost by 88 points.
The Demons had a three-game winning streak interrupted by a heavy loss to Nar Nar Goon a week ago, and with their own finals chances looking shot will be looking cause some havoc in the run home.
Finally, a local rivalry resumes as Kilcunda Bass meets Phillip Island.
The Panthers are in need of a scalp or two to make Warragul Industrials nervous, but they're going to be up against it here.
Phillip Island haven't tasted defeat since round two, making it hard to see them slipping up here.
