Road policing operation commences

Police are warning motorists to take care this Easter after five fatalities were recorded on the weekend.
'Operation Compass' launched at midnight last night and will see police adopt a strong presence on Victoria's roads and highways in an effort to reduce road trauma over the Easter long weekend.
The operation will be extended to cover both the Easter and ANAZC day public holidays.
Eleven people have died on the State's roads this month, including the five over the first weekend of the school holidays.
Areas deemed high risk will be a focus of the operation, as well as motorists traveling on regional roads.
Motorists are being encouraged to use VICSES Driver Reviver sites across the state to help manage fatigue during long trips.
Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Glenn Weir said Easter is a high-risk period, attracting significant travel across the state. He said this year poses additional challenges due to Easter and ANZAC day public holidays falling on consecutive weekends.
"We cannot be complacent. Just last weekend there were five fatalities on Victorian roads. This follows a record low number of lives lost for March, which just shows how easily trauma can occur if we don't all make road safety a priority," he said.
"We'll be doing everything we can to prevent more lives being lost – expect to see lots of police, lots of police vehicles and plenty of alcohol and drug testing during this period."
During the last year's Easter operation, police issued more than 9,000 infringements.
Operation Compass will conclude at 11.59pm on Monday, April 25 2022.
