Speaker's role for Aldred

Just a month after delivering her maiden speech in parliament, Member for Monash Mary Aldred has been appointed onto the Speaker's Panel.
"It is a terrific privilege," Ms Aldred said of her new role. "It was a great honour to receive my Speaker's Panel pin from Speaker of the House of Representatives the Hon Milton Dick."
Noting it wasn't common for a newly elected politician to be appointed into such a role in their first term, Ms Aldred explained the panel included six politicians - three from government and three from opposition - who would assist the Speaker to oversee chamber business.
The Speaker's role is to make sure MPs obey the rules of the House and follow correct procedures.
"It's a real honour, I want to do a really good job," Ms Aldred said. "I've got a lot of homework to do reading up on standing orders".
Making the announcement last week, Mr Dick said "I know she will carry this responsibility with pride and I thank her for taking on this important role."
Ms Aldred also has been appointed deputy chair of standing committee on communications, the arts and sport, stating they were "three very important areas for the Monash electorate."
