Loose veggies close highway for four hours

Bags of onions and cabbages closed the Princes Hwy at Trafalgar East early yesterday morning.
East bound motorists were swerving and dodging the bags of onions and cabbages after they were lost from a load east of the Telephone Rd railway crossing.
Traffic was diverted along Waterloo Rd as highway traffic was reduced to one lane for more than four hours.
Police said it appeared the driver was unaware the bags had fallen from the vehicle and continued driving.
The incident occurred at about 5am and the highway was closed for more than four hours until Vic Roads attended to clear the road.
Police said the vegetables were a safety concern because drivers were swerving the bags or hitting them, causing the vegetables to break up and create a slippery surface.
The lost load was reported to police by V-Line staff.
