CIU investigating possible poisoning of 75 calves at Darnum

Baw Baw CIU detectives are investigating the possible poisoning of 75 calves at a Darnum dairy farm over the weekend.

Up to 40 calves have died and the remaining calves remain unwell.

The Darnum farmer alerted police on Sunday after finding the unwell calves on his property.

Detectives were called in to investigate the sudden deaths and is liaising with the veterinarian who attended.

Detective sergeant Gordon Hynd confirmed they were investigating a suspected poisoning of the calves but were investigating a number of scenarios.

Water samples also have been taken.

Det sgt Hynd said it could be days or weeks before test results reveal anything.

The calves were on a property off the Princes Hwy.
