Neerim District (5/170) def. Hallora (117)
Travis McCann and Jamie Gleeson propelled Neerim District to a 53-run win over Hallora on Saturday, with the Stags duo overcoming some tidy new-ball bowling to establish a winning total.
Troy Nieuwerth (0/19 off 8) and John Riley (1/13 from 8) restricted scoring early but were unable to breach the defences of the determined Neerim batters, and McCann (55*) and Gleeson (46) batted intelligently to lead the Stags to 5/170 from their allotted overs.
In reply Dan Reiner struck a composed 33 at the top of the order to set the tone for the Kangaroos' run chase, but once Drew Ainge found his rhythm the rest of the Halloran order fell away.
Spinning the ball viciously past the advances of the lower order, Ainge (5/36) tempted batter after batter into ill-advised strokes, as Hallora were dismissed in the 30th over for 117.
Drouin (5/211) def. Catani (4/207)
Whilst the early rounds of the summer are normally dominated by bowlers – with batting line-ups usually falling victim to the rustiness associated with swinging the willow for the first time in many months – Drouin and Catani belied such expectations as the Hawks took home a six-wicket win in a high-scoring division four contest.
The Cats would no doubt have felt satisfied with their efforts batting first, as Cameron Wagstaff (77* from 75) and Matt Coleman (29 off 33) notched superb knocks; the duo piercing the infield with aplomb to lift Catani to 4/207 at the end of their allotted overs.
However, although Ben Hales (2/40) was able to make early inroads with the new ball, the rest of the attack found it almost impossible to restrict the flow of runs.
Lochie Downie (73 off 69, including 14 boundaries) and Clint Gilpin (who struck 65*) never allowed the Cats' change bowlers to settle, and they ensured the Hawks make light work of a potentially challenging chase, reaching 5/211 in the 35th over.
Iona (7/192) def. Garfield-Tynong (188)
A late collapse saw Garfield-Tynong fall short in a nail-biting encounter with Iona, as the Swamp Tigers held their nerve to escape with a four-run win.
In pursuit of a formidable target of 7/192, the Titans were in fine form early in their chase as Michael Cooper (a determined 33) and Lachlan O'Beirne (30 from just 21 balls) confidently struck the ball through the field.
Aaron Braaksma then continued the momentum, with a 52-ball 63 which displayed his full repertoire of strokes.
However, none of the aforementioned trio were able to truly break the game open, the Ionan attack instead able to make regular inroads.
As the game reached its crescendo it seemed as though Garfield-Tynong would have enough gas in the tank to edge out the Swamp Tigers, needing 11 off the final two overs.
However, Shero May had the final say in the matter, tempting Chevy Lacunes into a false stroke and skittling Glen Johnston – with Isaac Cornell run-out in between in a frantic 39th over – the triple breakthrough ending the Titans' innings just short.
