Yarragon opens on a high
by Samuel Laffy
Yarragon (6/133) def. Longwarry (7/132)
Across recent summers Yarragon frequently found themselves beleaguered, with the Panthers enduring long losing streaks that sapped the spirits of supporters.
However, Saturday's clash with Longwarry saw Yarragon begin season 2026-27 on a high, as they claimed a four-wicket win over the Crows.
It was an impressive bowling display that set the scenes for victory, as Laytten Smith (4/29 from 7) and Daniel Haddad (2/6 off 6) delivered exceptional spells that stymied the run-scoring hopes of Longwarry.
Samuel Wood (a dogged 53) anchored their innings, but aside from Randall Mitchell's lively knock of 23 there was little support as the Crows finished at 7/132 from 40 overs. Despite a somewhat middling total, Daniel Waite's opening over had Longwarry fans in full voice, as he disturbed the stumps of both Liam Butterworth and Chamath Fernando. Zac Wright (3/33 from 7) chimed in with an excellent supporting spell to again raise hopes, but the Panthers weren't to be denied.
Smith (45 from 55) was in superb form at the top of the order and Madhawa Fonseka (27 off 38) impressed as Yarragon made their way to 6/133 in the 28th over.
Garfield-Tynong (7/126) def. Buln Buln (7/125)
For much of Garfield-Tynong's run-chase against Buln, it seemed as though there was little the Lyrebirds could do to prevent the Titans from cruising to victory.
With 10 overs still remaining in the chase Garfield-Tynong were 3/103 and needing just a handful of runs to overtake Buln's total of 7/125. However, stunning spells from Riley Eastwell and Corey Jagoe flipped the script and propelled the clash to a nail-biting finish.
Jagoe's reputation as one of the more accomplished all-rounders in the WDCA needs little reaffirming, but the veteran once again displayed his immense talent, first trapping Tate Burgmann in front for 23, and following up with a double strike in the 38th over to leave the Titans suddenly reeling at 7/121.
Eastwell delivered a sublime over – with just a solitary single snuck – and heading into the final over of the day Garfield-Tynong still required four runs, a situation that few fans in attendance would have believed possible less than an hour earlier.
Thankfully for Titans' faithful, Brayden Ridler was able to hold his nerve and a scampered two – followed by two quick singles – saw his side snatch a three-wicket win.
Earlier in the day, the Lyrebirds' total was made possible by a stellar eighth-wicket stand between Coby Bridger (26*) and Josh Baker (16*), the duo atoning for some rash stroke play by the Buln top order.
Reflecting on the contest, Garfield-Tynong's Matt Dodman was relieved to walk away with the points, but also proud of the efforts of several new faces in the squad. "It was a bit of an unnecessary heartstopper in the end. We were cruising, but credit to how Corey leads his side. I was umpiring at the time of it all happening and he had all his players on board and still in the fight! Positive takeaways are how consistent our bowlers were. Three new faces with the ball yesterday, and they all played their part. The move to top-order to Archer Burgmann started quite positively, and we are expecting his performances to improve as we get into the season."
Iona (161) def. Drouin (113)
Having endured demotion from division one at the end of last summer, Iona would no doubt have been nursing somewhat of a bruised ego heading into season 2026-27, but the Swamp Tigers put such disappointments behind them on the weekend as they notched an impressive 48-run win over Drouin.
It was some of the usual suspects for Iona who provided inspiration at the top of the order, with WDCA stalwart Graeme Rankin (22 from 63) and Carter Davis (a 36-ball 43) combining for a 64-run opening stand.
Fletcher Pallot (32*) chimed in with an anchoring innings through the middle overs, and even though Paul Timewell (4/19) ran riot in his eight-over spell, the Swamp Tigers nonetheless posted a challenging total of 161.
Although the Hawks would have begun their pursuit with high hopes of success, Davis (2/23) and Pallot (3/23) ended such ideas, with the Ionan duo quickly reducing Drouin to 6/50.
Only Ravindu Chamalka Kankanamgamage Don (21 from 54) knuckled down amidst the flurry of wickets, as his teammates struggled to enjoy extended stays at the crease. In the end the Hawks were dismissed for 113 in the 38th over.
Western Park (5/174) def. Hallora (171)
Dale Fawcett once again turned back the clock in Western Park's nail-biting win over Hallora, with the veteran step-hitter belying those most vocal – frequently his own team-mates – who insist his best might be past him.
Wasting little time in settling against the new-ball offerings of Aaron Maxwell and Alex Donnelly, 'Daisy' displayed his propensity for punishment in an effortless innings of 76, unfurling a host of lofted drives and extravagant pulls to quickly set the tempo for his team-mates.
Birthday boy Kurtis Harper (19 from 60) provided watchful support early, whilst Angus 'Sheriff' Geals (35 from 35) chimed in with a handy knock in the latter part of the innings to lift the Warriors to 5/174.
In the early part of the Kangaroos' pursuit, Andrew Donohue (37 from 51), including a pair of towering sixes) and Mitchell Smith (26 off 27) looked capable of propelling their side to victory, but a flurry of scalps from 'Garry' Thompson (3/35) and Ed Dieu (2/44) saw Western Park gain the upper hand.
However, Maxwell (21*) and Luke Nieuwerth (10) combined for a stunning last-wicket stand that saw the required runs dwindle. Entering the final over, Hallora needed just four to win, but to the relief of Western Park faithful a mix-up between the wickets saw Nieuwerth short of his crease, the Warriors emerging victorious by three runs.
