Croquet braves the elements

The Warragul Croquet Club hosted their annual doubles tournament over the weekend with entrants coming from Bairnsdale, Sale, Traralgon, Morwell, Leongatha, Korumburra, Wonthaggi, Drouin, Kew and Lilydale to compete.
Under fine conditions, a full day's play was completed on Saturday with the first games hitting off at 8.30am and the last game not concluding until 6.30 pm.
Following play on Saturday, an enjoyable meal was enjoyed by a small group at the Warragul Country Club.
Sunday's weather proved to be a challenge for all players.
Once again, play commenced at 8.30am under grey skies but then the heavens opened. In no time at all players, officials and courts were absolutely drenched.
Croquet players are made of strong stuff, meaning wet weather gear was donned and play continued with the final game finishing about 3.45pm.
Afternoon tea was enjoyed by all 32 players - and club members - at the end of play.
The section one winners were Mary Tabrah (Sale) and Stephen Beitz (Leongatha) while the runners-up were Glenn Crook (Lilydale) and Joy Mitchell (Kew).
The section two winners were Sue Downie and Lynette Taylor (Traralgon), runners-up were Kevin Young and Gary Wellsmore (Morwell).
