Poowong turned the disappointment of last year's grand final defeat into premiership success, defeating Buln Buln 24-18 to complete an outstanding season for the 15 and under minor premiers.
Both sides took some time to settle, with strong defensive pressure keeping scoring opportunities limited throughout the opening term.
Buln Buln held the narrowest of advantages at the first break, 7-6, before Poowong began to find its rhythm in the second quarter. The Pies lifted their work rate across the court and outscored the Lyrebirds 8-3 to turn the one-goal deficit into a 14-10 half-time lead.
Buln Buln continued to work hard to close the gap after the break, but Poowong's defensive pressure and patience with the ball allowed the Pies to extend their advantage. Another 5-4 quarter gave Poowong a 19-14 lead at three-quarter time, leaving the Lyrebirds needing to find five goals in the final term.
Poowong remained composed with the premiership within reach, matching Buln Buln's pressure and again winning the quarter 5-4 to close out a six goal victory.
Best on court: Poowong goal attack Keesha Gooch was named best on court with the premiership capping off a memorable week for the Pies after captain Mia Wilson was crowned the EDFNL 15 and under best and fairest earlier in the week.
